About Department:
Department of Pharmacology is an important paraclinical department that renders academic services to undergraduate and postgraduate students and support patient related services to clinical departments by providing drug information and assisting Pharmacy in-charge in preparing hospital drug formulary. It imparts knowledge about Journey of the drugs starting from its origin, action, its movement in the body (pharmacokinetics) and its beneficial and hazardous effect on our body.
The Department is situated at first floor of college building and welcomes the students of II-year MBBS, II-year BDS and first year postgraduates of MD (Pharmacology). The department also provides teaching-learning support to B.Sc. (OT & AT) students.
The department is headed by Dr Usha Sadasivan, retired Dean of reputed Govt. Medical College with outstanding administrative & educational excellence record. She is having 31 years of teaching experience.
The department has necessary teaching learning facilities for undergraduates as well as postgraduates as per MCI norms. The department has an animal house that was established in year 2014 to initiate research on small animals for postgraduate training. It is registered in 17/8/2015 and license is renewed (1818/GO/Ere/S/15/CPCSEA) on 4/12/2018. Facilities of animal house are available to all other departments as well as sister institutes. Students are trained about the animal experiments in Computer simulated model installed in central library.
The department has Pharmacovigilance unit to support pharmacovigilance program. Postgraduates students daily visit the clinical departments, collect adverse drug reactions (ADR) and report it to our department. After causality assessment, report is sent to approved ADR monitoring centre. The department is very keen in creating awareness among students, faculties and hospital staff about adverse drug reactions. Every 2 monthly pharmacology department conducts awareness program about ADR and drug safety.
Department houses spacious museum with models developed by students about mechanism of action of drugs. Pharmacokinetics charts, charts with history of drugs, herbal medicine charts, various commonly used drugs, and different medical devices for understanding routes of drug administration are also displayed in the museum.
Department promotes students’ participatory activities by organising model /quiz / poster competition for the students in order to develop creativity and kindle their interest in Pharmacology. Postgraduates are motivated to conduct research other than dissertation with emphasis on Animal Research, Pharmacovigilance, Pharmacogenomics and Toxicology. Research aptitude of undergraduates is encouraged by undertaking ICMR-STS project. In last 3 years, two ICMR-STS projects have been accepted from our Department.
