The department started since the inception of Karpaga Vinayaga Institute of Medical sciences and Research Centre in 2009. At the time, department of psychiatry was active in rendering diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients suffering from severe mental disorders, common mental disorders, and substance abuse.  The important focus was on closing the gap of mental health needs of rural population. Electroconvulsive therapy services are offered since 2014. The department started offering relaxation therapy with biofeedback since 2016 to help people suffering from common mental disorders.

The department conducts teaching program for 2nd and 3rd year MBBS students during their clinical postings and theory classes were also taken in their pre-final year.

Post-graduate program was inducted in the department (M.D Psychiatry) since 2017, with an intake of two MD students per year. Currently six post graduate students are pursuing their Master’s Degree. The department has been active in teaching and research activities along with continuous improvement of clinical services in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
